So, the Fediverse. Thanks to the shenanigans at Twitter (which I didn’t use anyway) I heard about Mastodon and the Fediverse. It sounds amazing – a federated social network technology that can’t be owned by a single company and doesn’t carry ads. It’s been around a few years but it’s in the spotlight at the moment, for obvious reasons.
In its basic form it’s similar to Twitter, but the underlying communication protocol can be built into all kinds of applications. So there are a number of instances providing services that replicate many of the major social media sites.
I’ve signed up to Pixelfed, which is a photo-sharing site similar to Instagram (which I have an account on but never log on to) to have a play around and see what’s what.
There’s a great introductory website called Fedi-Tips that explains it better than I have.
My profile: Pixelfed. There’s not much there yet.
